Recently, while watching the world go by outside an Italian restaurant, an idle thought crossed our minds.
What if those 1950s-style, round-toe, flat “ballerina” pumps (the ones that young women everywhere seem to be wearing in the street) had really high, thin stiletto heels? Put another way, how much more sensational would the classic “Baby Doll” round-toe court shoes of the early-to-mid 1950s have looked if a really high, slender heel, like our (5mm-diameter) Ultra-High Stiletto, had been possible at the time?
The evolution of heel design through the 1950s shows a gradual increase in height and reduction in bulk, culminating around the turn of the decade in the true “stiletto”. It seems obvious in hindsight that if heels could have become higher and thinner at any time during this period of refinement, they would have - indeed, fashion and fetish illustrators were drawing exaggeratedly thin high heels long before footwear technology enabled the existence of the Stiletto.
It is undeniable that a short, round toe emphasises the heel of the shoe, making it look proportionally very high - but some people continue to favour the dynamic, lethal appearance and powerful image statement of a pointed toe. The RoSa Shoes collection now caters for both tastes.
Many women who like to incorporate “vintage” themes in their personal style will quickly see the 1950s Retro connection in our new round-toe Ultra-High Stiletto variations. They do indeed have a strong affinity with what we regard nowadays as the “burlesque” style high-heeled shoes of the decade, as seen accessorising the tailored skirt suit of many a film noir career woman or femme fatale. However, we think most women (certainly most male observers who appreciate a woman wearing a sexy pair of shoes) will be delighted that we have replaced the old-style '50s block heel with a thin stiletto heel more typical of a slightly later era.
Attempting to revisit lifestyles of the past is a popular pastime but “retro” influences should not be taken too literally. Far better in our opinion to collect the ingredients, mix them up a bit and make something original. Hence our latest recipe - a round toe with a thin heel.
Others, of course, may view the new toe-shape entirely differently – our new round-toe Ultra-High Stiletto shoes can be interpreted as being more conservative and conventionally feminine than anything we have done previously – something which would enable a woman of more classic taste to indulge her secret passion for vertiginous footwear in a manner more acceptable in some circles than would a shoe with a racier, aggressively pointed toe. There are undoubtedly women who work in smart professional, commercial or executive environments wearing the very highest of heels, but who would not wish to risk the raising of corporate eyebrows at the somewhat more subversive message sent out by our trademark long pointed toe. High and slender though the heel of our new shoe may be, the round toe defines a very smart, efficient and businesslike persona, and, we suspect, our new style combination may well bring RoSa Shoes to the attention of a new set of friends.
